1. Where are you from?
1. The place of my birth is Durgapur, in the state of West Bengal, country India.
2. In your artistic life, what interesting experiences have you had?
2. This question holds significant importance and intrigue for me, as it reflects the diverse experiences and emotions that shape my artistic journey. The current environment, including the interactions with those around me and the opportunities presented in my creative practice, often leads to a sense of internal and external contradiction. The artistic experience can be both fascinating and frustrating, as it does not always align with a sense of fairness or satisfaction throughout the creative process and life. Despite the confusion and contradictions I face in reality, I find immense fulfillment when I engage with my canvas or paper, as these moments are the most rewarding aspects of my artistic endeavors.
3. What interests you to express in your art work?
3. The questions posed are indeed quite challenging and significant in nature. I believe that my creativity is inspired by a primitive, caveman-like instinct, which manifests as a spontaneous response. This perspective stems from the idea that drawing and line work represent humanity's earliest form of communication, a skill that seems to have diminished in our modern, developed society. Self-expression is a fundamental psychological aspect that requires introspection and realization, yet it often eludes clear identification. At times, I find myself puzzled by the motivations that drive my creative pursuits. Nevertheless, I recognize that my creativity serves as a vital outlet for self-reflection and expression, acting as a unique voice that articulates my interests. An unseen force compels me to engage with my cultural roots actively.
4. Do you have a special style?
4. Every artist must embark on a lengthy journey to develop their unique style. I have cultivated my own distinct forms that make my creativity easily recognizable. This signature style is so identifiable that viewers can immediately associate it with my name, Sanjoy Rakshit, a sentiment echoed by many long-time followers of my work. My artistic expression encompasses various styles, ranging from completely abstract to semi-abstract, showcasing the diversity within my creative portfolio.
5. Have you had an exhibition that you consider the most important or interesting, for some reason?
5. I recall the Saatchi Museum's screen showcase exhibition, where my creativity was displayed for six months. An agreement was signed, ensuring that my work will continue to be showcased in the future, regardless of my presence. This marked a significant milestone in my artistic career, as it was the first time my creations were sold through the Saatchi Gallery, with additional pieces collected from countries such as the USA and Australia. This experience has been particularly intriguing within my creative practice. Over the course of my 53-year artistic journey, I have encountered a myriad of experiences, some of which have been challenging while others have been quite fascinating. The breadth of my experiences warrants a more extensive discussion to fully convey the depth and complexity of my creative evolution.
6. What are your favorite artists and why?
6. In the realm of global culture, I have an extensive list of favorite artists, among whom Picasso stands out as one of my top choices. His vibrant and dynamic creative style, along with the depth of meaning conveyed through his work, captivates me. I am particularly impressed by his distinctive artistic persona.
7. Do you want to transmit some message with your work?
7. Creativity possesses a remarkable ability to convey messages, making it one of the most potent forms of expression. It can encapsulate a wide range of emotions, including sadness, protest, and joy. I have explored my creative potential through various mediums, and the strength of my creativity is evident in my work. I hold the belief that art serves as a conduit for truth, underscoring the necessity for artists to have the freedom and opportunities to let this truth emerge.
8. What does art mean in your life?
8. Art encompasses every aspect of life, capturing each moment and emotion, serving as a true reflection of our existence. This assertion stems from the realization that our daily routines are inextricably linked to artistic expression. From the simple act of grooming in front of a mirror to the selection of clothing based on personal aesthetic preferences, we engage with art continuously. The creation of aesthetically pleasing living environments is yet another manifestation of this art form. I believe that every individual possesses an inherent artistic quality, as our very existence is intertwined with creativity. By delving deeper into this everyday art, we unlock a profound understanding of our true selves and identity. For me, life without art is unimaginable.
9. Which techniques do you like to work with?
9. I hold strong personal views regarding the creative field, believing that it lacks rigid traditional techniques. While academic programs may offer certain conventional methods and pathways, I find them limiting. My preference leans towards experimental work, as I strive to transcend these boundaries. Currently, I am engaged in a project that utilizes unconventional colors—essentially, colors that do not fit traditional definitions—through my unique techniques, which I have titled the "Dumbed in Crowd & Dark Series." This work can be viewed on my Facebook profile.
10. What would you do to bring art closer to people?
10. To foster a closer connection between art and the public, it is essential for individuals to actively engage with art rather than expecting it to be brought to them. Cultivating an interest in culture requires time and effort, much like the way one might invest in a mobile caller tune. In India, for instance, there exists a segment of the population that struggles to comprehend modern art, which underscores the necessity of immersion in the artistic experience. Understanding art demands participation and a willingness to explore its depths. While some individuals appreciate and support creative endeavors, the role of the artist is crucial in bridging this gap. Artists often dedicate their lives to their craft, making significant sacrifices in pursuit of their passion, even if financial success remains elusive for many. In today's digital age, the opportunity to explore diverse artistic expressions is readily available; however, the onus is on the audience to invest time and effort in appreciating art. Only then can we embark on a meaningful journey toward discovering the profound truths that art can illuminate in our lives. My main goal is to connect with individuals by showcasing my creativity alongside that of other artists through various social media platforms. It is essential to emphasize that this initiative is not meant to function as a mobile caller tune.
